MICK’S PICKS CONCERT REVIEWS – 2006
Mick was too busy in 2006 to write longer reviews… (these were very tongue-in-cheek)
Dwight Yoakum, The Saddle Rack, Fremont 2/12/06
Great show with the modern master of “the Bakersfield sound”. He and his greasy new band did all their outstanding Cadillac songs like “Long White Cadillac” and “Guitars and Cadillacs” and cool covers of Cheap Trick’s “I Want You” and Queen’s “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” to boot!
The Reverend Billy C. Wirtz, Kuumbwa Jazz Center, Santa Cruz 2/18/06
Great show with the master of comic boogie woogie piano. He did all his outstanding songs like “Cousin Cupcake’s Got The Blues” and “Honky Tonk Hermaphrodite” and a cool cover of Jerry Lee Lewis’s “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” to boot!
Supergrass, Great American Music Hall, SF 2/23/06
Great show with one of the the masters of the “Brit pop sound”. They did all their outstanding songs like “Caught By The Fuzz” and “Pumping On Your Stereo” and lots of cool songs off the new album “Road To Rouen” to boot!
Asylum Street Spankers, Don Quxote’s, Felton 3/8/06
Great show with the masters of quirky, sex and drug riddled, 20’s and 30’s jazz standards nobody has ever heard, done with a punk rock mentality. They did all their outstanding songs (seeing it was their 25th anniversary tour!) like “Beer” and “My Favorite Record” and lots more with original member, the amazing Guy Forstyth to boot!
Jon Langford’s Ship and Pilot, Cafe Du Nord, SF 4/12/06
Great show with the master of The Mekons, Waco Brothers and about 10 other projects. They did all their outstanding songs off the new album, “Gold Brick” like “Lost In America” and “Anything Can Happen” and he even personally autographedÝ one of his new art books for me to boot!
Aquabats, Slim’s SF 517/06
Great show with the masters of masked superhero surf punk. They did all their outstanding songs like…uh… I can’t remember any song titles, but they even had cool commercials for their music on a giant video screen between songs.Ý And all the kids knew all the words to their songs to boot!
Neil Innes, Cobb’s Comedy Club, SF 5/23/06
Great show with the master ofÝ the British comedy song. He did all his outstanding tunes like “Brave Sir Robin” and “Cheese and Onions” and had us in stitches with all his stories of hanging with the Beatles and Monty Python to boot!
Cornell Hurd Band, Central Market, Austin, Texas 5/27/06
Great show with the master of twisted Texas swing music. He did all his outstanding tunes like “Don’t Wipe Your Face On Your Shirt”, but he didn’t do “Rubboard Playin’ Man” and for that I’d like to give him the boot!
Charlatans UK, Filmore, SF 6/5/06
Great show with another one of the masters of Brit pop. They did lots of outstanding songs off their new album “Simpatico”, like “Blackened Blue Eyes” and “Muddy Ground” and I think they did a cover too…uh…to boot!
The Walkmen, Great American Music Hall, SF 6/12/06
Great show with the masters of a strange new type of pop music that lots of cute young girls seem to like. They did lots of outstanding tunes from their new album “One Hundred Miles Off” like “Lost in Boston” and “Emma, Get Me A Lemon” and a cool older song called “The Rat”. They’re so cool that their next album will be a complete cover of Harry Nilsson’s “Pussy Cats” album to (puss n’) boot!
Fiery Furnaces, Amoeba Music, SF 6/15/06
Great show by the masters of doing just the opposite of what you think they will do. They did some outstanding songs from their new disc, “Bitter Tea” like “Benton Harbor Blues” and “Black Hearted Boy” but cuz the songs always sound different I’m just not sure what other songs they did…and they ROCKED to boot!
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, GAMH, SF 6/15/06
Great show by the masters of…uh BLACK REBEL ROCK,Ý I guess. They did lots of outstanding songs I had never heard including the cool, “Mercy” and I think I’d go see ’em again to (wear my motorcycle) boot!
T-Bone Burnett, GAMH, SF 6/15/06
Great show by the master of Rock ‘n Roll eccentricity. He did lots of outstanding songs from his new album, “True False Identity”,Ý like “Zombie Land” and “Palestine, Texas” with awesome players like Marc Ribot (played with Elvis Costello and Tom Waits)Ý on guitar and Jim Keltner (played with John Lennon, Ringo Starr and Eric Clapton) on drums… and I actually saw the last three bands ALL in one night…to boot!!!
